The intercultural aspects of self-presentation and impression management strategies
In today’s globalised workplace, you can meet employers or colleagues from different countries and nationalities at almost any time. How we present ourselves, what our communication in the workplace, our leadership style or our personal branding is like reflects our attitude to our face saving strategies. There are different strategies that can be used, but these can vary from culture to culture and can lead to misunderstandings.
During the workshop, participants will learn about the systems of self-presentation, impression making and cultural values. They will learn about strategies of self-presentation and impression making, such as self-glorification, target-glorification or self-degradation, and their culturally specific tendencies. Through role-playing, they experience possible communication difficulties arising from differences in cultural values, and then develop strategies for resolutions, and discuss their own experiences. The workshop will provide an opportunity to try out strategies for self-presentation and impression making, using language tools to do so, with a strong emphasis on awareness and reflection on the feelings experienced. Skills useful in many situations such as job search processes, personal branding or communication in the workplace are acquired.
